The town of Eden, lies on the southern New South Wales coastline, just north of the border with Victoria. It is a town with considerable history. It lies on the shores of Twofold Bay which provides a safe harbour for the local charter fishing fleet. In the past, Eden was a major whaling port and it operated until the early sixties when the east coast population of southern humback whales was almost completely wiped out. Today the only whaling that operates from the town is the charter boats taking out passengers to see the whales as they migrate by. Eden has an extremely interesting whaling museum that has many exhibits from the past that are really interesting.
Today, Twofold Bay is home to a large commercial trawler fleet plus most yachtsmen cruising along the coast will call into Eden either before or after their Bass Straight crossing. There is also a timber industry operating in the region and there are magnificent forests in the ranges to the west. This region is magnificent and everyone should take the drive through from Bega to Cooma and see the spectacular Australian scenery along this drive. Cooma is the jumping off point for the Snowy Mountains and the skiing resorts of Thredbo and Perisher valley. Eden is surrounded by historical sites. Boydtown dates back to the whaling days of the 1800’s and much of it still survives. Ben Boyd National Park is nearby and well worth a visit. Eden also has fantastic facilities for watersports. Its beaches are sensational and there is also the opportunity for both fishing and diving charters with local operators who know the best places for both. The town commercial area is a great place to spend the day, with lots of interesting shops and galleries. Fresh seafood is the lifeblood of the town and its restaurants and cafes are a special place to go and try it out.
Eden has a reputation for being a fantastic family holiday destination and there is always plenty of accommodation on offer. It has a range that starts with backpacker hostels and also includes B&B’s, holiday homes, hotels and motels. There are also several licenced clubs that welcome visitors and they provide excellent meals and entertainment. Eden is a fantastic place for a holiday so why not take the kids there the next time you are planning a trip away.
